Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

As a Y-CBDA and Programs Coordinator of Phalombe Youth Arms Organisation, I design programs that contribute to the improvement of Youth Friendly Health Services (YFHS) access and delivery. For example, monthly and quarterly joint supervisions help to ensure that all health facilities offer YFHS to the youths. This has improved accessibility of family planning contraceptives. Youth Community Based Distribution Agent (YCBDA) distributes condom and oral contraceptives to the youth at a convenient location. I have supported a lot of youths through this initiatives. I have also coordinated projects that have seen youths being trained in peer education, YFHS, CSE and Family planning in contribution to demographic dividend. Social and Behavioural change is the area of focus for us to achieve

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Phalombe district`s fertility rate is at 7 which is the highest as compared to that of a nation. A lot of young people are married early due to unplanned teen pregnancies. This is a contributing factor to the a rapid district population growth. A lot of girls also drop out of school due to pregnancies. This forced me to find solution to help these girls avoid pregnancies for education purposes. Government has a YFHS strategy and reproductive health policy, I needed to be part of it.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I facilitate in establishing of YFHS clubs where youths discuss about reproductive health issues including FP issues. I mentor and lead young people in sensitizing and civic educating the community about Family Planning

I advocate for easy access to contraceptive methods e.g I asked the National Youth Council and/or DHO to deal with the issues of contraception methods scarcity. This helped us YCBDAs to be accessing condoms and pills easily.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

This will help the current program I have. I designed a program called Action for Adolescents where I would like to reach out to atleast 7, 000 youths with YFHS especially family planning information and services in Phalombe district through 16 YFHS clubs located in all health facilities in the district. The approaches used will enable the youths to take FP messages to their fellow youths. Role models to be used will also help the girls to continue with their education. That grant will help alot
