Victor developed and implemented the initiative: Raising awareness on rights & access to family planning for vulnerable youth in Rwanda (overarching goal of reducing teenage pregnancies). His team reached over 1000 youth with limited resources. – Christelle Favre, Country Co-ordinator (Switzerland) at IYAFP
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I initiated project called “raising awareness on rights and access to family planning in Rwandan Youth(Rafpy)” whose goal is reduction of teen pregnancy/unplanned in Rwanda by using “for youth by youth” approach. With the key funding from International youth Alliance for family planning(IYAFP), we trained more than 1000 youths from southern rural district(GISAGARA) about their rights to family planning services,
I coordinated the project activities by identifying ten youth clubs, selection of multidisciplinary team of volunteers, organizing teaching sessions, partnering with local institutions, data collections and reporting. For diffusion of the impact, the findings were shared on social media with international communities, on local radio and during ICFP2018.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Growing up in a rural community of poor health indicators has driven my passion to study medicine, which in turn has fostered the very foundations of my commitment to family planning. Early on, since primary school, many of classmates got early pregnancy, forcing them to drop out of school. It was sad because many of them used to be forced to follow their husbands who were, at times, not able to raise their children. And in my class, we were only three boys to make it to the secondary school.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

we educate family planning(FP) in local language which has culturally and religiously challenging norms- (legal and educational framework- practicing abstinence) particularly informing those who are unmarried. Nevertheless, I managed to break the silence and used secret question box to encourage youths asking some private questions and yet guarantee anonymity. And, with a team of medical students , we finalized a strong set of teaching materials which can be replicated for other activities.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

It will be a great opportunity to learn from multicultural diversity(network). In addition to resuming my responsibilities as Rwanda’s country coordinator of international youth alliance for family planning, I will use of it to test and refine my prototype about addressing myths around family planning in rural settings through community adapted comics( stories and games). The other half will be used for teaching sessions to the group of single mothers who got teenage pregnancy in Huye district.
