Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I am a gynecologist in the main clinic of adolescents in Costa Rica part of the Social Security, we work in the access to family planning methods for women under 20 years, we are pioneers in our country in the use of long-term contraceptive methods in adolescents ( subdermic implants and intrauterine devices) we currently train medical and nursing staff in the placement of these devices which has reflected a decrease in teenage pregnancy from 18.4% in 2013 to 14.8% in 2017
Personally I disclose at the level of digital platforms in a blog writing about topics of importance in adolescent gynecology, among these, contraception in adolescence.
We educate college and primary school groups on sexual and reproductive health.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

The fact that no girl or adolescent should be a mother in those ages. They belong to the classrooms, to learn, to dream and fulfill these dreams.
Young women have the right to a correct sexual and reproductive health with access to contraceptive methods.
The use of these methods to prevent an unwanted pregnancy makes the difference in the future that women may have.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

Work with the leading health team nationwide in the placement of long-term contraceptive methods in adolescents

Educate health personnel from other areas of the country in the placement of these methods in adolescents despite the myths that exist about their use

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

In the adolescent clinic we have the knowledge about the scientific part of the contraceptive methods but we must learn more and have knowledge about tools that allow us to have more impact, more successful in the adherence to contraceptives, to continue informing the girls about the access that they can have to better methods without being influenced by prejudice
