Miss Louis, a Nurse Midwife dedicated to reducing Maternal Mortality in Haïti, contributed to our hospital now offering a 5 year implant contraceptive to post-partum women. In 2016 she placed 144 Implants in women on L&D as part of a QI project. – Meredith Casella Jean-Baptiste, Women's Health Coordinator at Partner's In Health
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

In the service(labor & delivery ward),every morning I start with postpartum education sessions for women, and I encourage them especially to adopt a Family Planning method, providing them all the necessary information about the methods they can adopt, especially focusing on the implant,long-acting, very effective and reversible. When women accept a method I give them their chosen method immediately before they are discharged.I take this opportunity to educate the woman's companions(family and friends) and sometimes the companions adopt a method of FP. This is how I’ve placed 144 contraceptive implants over the last year.We started this project in March2016 when we were not offering any methods on the Labor & Delivery or Post-Partum.Now we place on average 60implant/month on-patient wards.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

One day while I was on duty, I received a 16-year-old girl for whom a septic abortion was diagnosed with peritonitis. While I was talking to her, she was crying it wasn’t what she wanted, she didn’t want to have a child now because she wanted to finish those classical studies because she known her parents will not accept her with a pregnancy so she had a clandestine abortion. This is When i realized that FP is a must for the women of my country, so we can avoid death of plenty of them.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I am a leader and example to other members of the maternity team in my motivation and energy that I put into the work that I do. The fact that we can provide a long-acting method to women immediately after delivering her baby, ensures that she will be protected from unintended pregnancies and from dying in a future pregnancy while the method is in place. I am also motivated because these actions have a larger impact on maternal mortality in Haïti.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I will use this grant to further the success of the project we have implemented. I would love to collaborate with other organizations to develop a media strategy such as television spots to further the education and importance of Family Planning methods that women can adopt here depending on their needs and unique situation. Education is empowerment when it comes to women being able to decide how to plan their families.
