Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I have conducted 33 comprehensive IUCD training (5 days) over last 2 years in which 184 clinical staffs were trained. To ensure initiation of services, 1 supportive supervision visits was done at each place within 3 weeks. To ensure quality of services, OSCE using a checklist was performed for each of the trained provider and deficient areas were corrected on an ongoing basis. To clear myths and misconceptions related to IUCD in community and to facilitate demand of FP services, regular interactions were made with community health workers. FP counseling & commodity management training were conducted to strengthen counseling services and to prevent FP commodity stock outs. All the mentioned activities leads to an increased IUCD acceptance and more than 15, 000 IUCD insertions were done.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

During my MPH, I noticed that majority of our population resides in either rural area and urban slums and have many children. They didn’t understand the concept of family planning, have limited access to FP services, this resulted in a high unmet need of 13.9 % (NFHS III). Since we also have high MMR and IMR, I thought maybe one single intervention in the field of FP can break this vicious cycle (Ignorancehigh fertility ratehigh birth rate poor health of mother and child Poverty↑MMR, ↑IMR,)

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

In a hospital 2 staffs were trained, however services failed to pick up. Once I visited this facility, identified poor counselling as the main roadblock to the program. I sat with facility staffs and explained advantages of IUCD and clarified provider’s doubts. A roaster was formulated to ensure counselling of all the eligible clients and also emphasized on post insertion counselling. This resulted in increased IUCD acceptance & follow up rate.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I will show these achievements to whole world by writing articles and presenting achievement stories that may influence other public health workers. I will spend for the promotion and distribution of family planning IEC and BCC materials in local language among field level workers to use them as their job aid. I will spend to felicitate the good work of providers’, counselor as well as field level workers of each division in Chhattisgarh India to motivate them to provide quality services.
