Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

Since my passion lies in increasing the uptake of family planning methods and tries to address the unmet need I have started liasoning with Districts for establishing of counseling corners at all high service delivery points as there was no such concept. With regular advocacy with district health officials, I have succeeded in establishing counseling corners at all high service delivery points. Imparted capacity building training on FP counseling to service providers which results in 10,103 women being counseled and 2,813 had adopted for family planning services. Morigaon recorded a jump of 1.8 % of PPIUCD insertion to 16.9% and Darrang from 6.8% to 10.3%. Also advocated for Quality Improvement Mechanism at all facility level and establishing a strong follow-up mechanism for FP services.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

My passion for Family planning program had sparked for two reasons, 1st Assam stood 2nd in MMR which shows there is a high unmet need. Women between the age group of 15-35 are more vulnerable, as pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of maternal death and morbidity. Secondly, Assam being badly hit by the influx of immigrants which leads to unsafe motherhood, unplanned pregnancy and unsafe abortion and I believe these issues could be addressed by dissemination of informed choice on FP

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I have conducted and supported capacity building workshops on FP counseling for service providers to strengthen the family planning services. Building community linkages through ASHA to reach every household. Supportive Supervison has been provided to service providers for better performance and exchange of ideas from other districts. Supporting districts in rolling out FPLMIS system for the smooth functioning of FP commodities.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I will use this platform for sensitizing those people who due to some social stigma hesitant to speak about their sexual and reproductive needs. Will focus on creating a leader from their own community to bridge the gap exists. My focus will be on creating innovative tools and IEC to empower them by providing a platform of voluntarism and informed choice.
