Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I am the founder of BraveHeart Initiative for Youth & Women (BHI) a leading feminist organisation in Nigeria advancing young people’s sexual & reproductive rights and promoting women’s rights. At BHI, I lead young people to support state coordination and strengthen community systems for contraceptive uptake as well as implement comprehensive AYSRH programs for rural young people who are often hard to reach and left behind.

My team articulate and adapt high impact reproductive health interventions including advocacy, social mobilization, voice & accountability, data for decision making. We provide a safe space for adolescent girls, strengthen justice system for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and have successfully facilitated convictions of ten (10) sexual offenders.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

I lost a childhood friend to complications from an unsafe abortion and it led me into championing education about teenage pregnancy. My community has a high-level of discriminatory practices and stigma against pregnant teenagers & unmarried women. In 2002, at age 18, I initiated a youth development club which provided sex education (abstinence & condom usage) to in-school young people. In 2007, the club transformed into a YouthLed, YouthFocused NGO (BHI) providing wide range of AYSRH services.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

As a member of the NTWG-AHD as well as Edo State AHD-TWG, I make rich contributions to development of adolescent health policies and programs in Nigeria. I am instrumental to establishment of STWGs-AHD as well as formation of State Life Planning Ambassadors.

I work with Youth FP Advocates on young people’s approaches to FP Programs. I served as Co-Chair, Youth Sub-Committee for the 5th Nigeria FP Conference in 2018 and as Member, Local Organising Committee for National AHD Conference, 2019.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

• Creates a safe space for GIRLS-ONLY to share knowledge, skills & experiences
• Creates a platform for girls to learn in a friendly, healthy and conducive space.
• Educates girls about sexuality & reduce incidence of unwanted pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, & STIs.

Invest 30% of grant in a documentary as memorial for my late staff (Rhoda & Promise).
