Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

In the present age of global backlash on women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights , most often than not, perpetrated by the governments themselves, the issue of family planning cannot be looked at in isolation. In my current role at Pravah, I work with a network of 10 partner organisations directly working with 1700+ young people across India to enable young people, especially women and girls, to have full agency over lives and bodies. The year-long, curriculum-style programme supports young people in understanding themselves regarding their values, aspirations and bodies and also their surroundings like gender inequality and patriarchy . In addition also gain skills of negotiation, decision-making, conflict handling and organising community.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

My interest in family planning is deeply rooted in my feminist values. In a gender equal world, women’s bodies will not be subjected to patriarchal and capitalist systems and women will have full agency over their own bodies and lives. For me, gender equality and all the components within it, including family planning is personal and as we say personal is political! Because I have the opportunity to make my voice heard, I intend to use it on every platform I can.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I my current role at Pravah, I work on an entire range of activities with partner organisations from diverse backgrounds from design, facilitation, alliance building to capacity building and content enhancement
I am also one of 25 young leaders selected by SheDecides movement working on gender equality to create a world where women have full agency over their own bodies. As a SheDecides young leader, I am able to take the experience of my work from regional to global level and advocate for it.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

If given the opportunity , I will utilise the grant in building capacity of young change makers working at the grassroots on gender equality and SRHR to further strengthen and deepen their on-ground efforts. This investment will in terms of programme management, design and facilitation, content expertise and co-creation of meaningful spaces of other young people. This approach ensures sustainability and continued cascading effect.
