Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

In my career I have worked in various capacities to promote FP. As the pioneer staff of an FP project (WHP) I improved FP uptake in my region by recruiting health facilities, creating demand, supplying the facilities with FP commodities & collecting data to monitor progress. This project is over 8 years now and continues to meet FP needs in the region. As a demand creation officer, I built capacity of over 5500 Patent medicine vendors(PPMVs) on FP, counseling & referral services. i have also conducted over 3000 detailing calls to FP providers to encourage provider behavior change, about 450 new outlets were opened for supply of FP products & services. Currently I lead community level demand creation activities with 20 IPC agents and we have reached over 520000 WRA in the last 4 years.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

The alarming reproductive health indices in my country have been a great source of concern to me especially since a colleague opened my eyes to see that our maternal mortality rate was as bad as a large aircraft such as a Boeing 747 full of women crashing yearly. I realised that family planning was crucial in saving lives. FP would reduce unsafe abortions and promote safe motherhood. FP would keep our women alive. This gives me the zeal to promote FP constantly.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I lead and organize all demand creation activities for the FP project in my region, I manage a team of 20 IPC agents; recruiting, training, supervising & motivating them to generate demand for FP. I contribute to the training of new set of FP advocates by teaching & mentoring young interns from the school of public health in my state. By the end of their posting they leave with a passion for FP and acquired skills for community mobilization & demand generation

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

From my work I realized Traditional Birth Attendants(TBAs) have a great deal of influence over WRA especially in the rural communities. I intend to recruit TBAs in meeting the FP need in Oyo state. I will train 50 TBAs from each of the 3 senatorial zones in Oyo state. They will be trained in community mobilization & Family Planning counseling to reach high percentage of women who come to them for delivery. I will also use the platform to create a referral system between TBAs and FP providers
