Jane is a dynamic & committed Family Planning(FP)/Reproductive Health Specialist. She has played key roles in provider information on modern FP methods including newer methods like Sayana Press in rural and urban Nigeria thus expanding method choice. – Chinyere Adizue, Head, Sales and Distribution at Society for Family Health Nigeria
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

Having contributed over 5years of extensive field work in both rural & urban areas in Northern Nigeria, I have engaged various cadre of health providers &key influencers to increase modern family planning(FP)method uptake by way of behavior change communication, trainings on modern FP methods & use of balanced counseling skills in service provision. My efforts have blossomed into tangible results by virtue of my contribution to my organisation’s achievements such that in 2017, we were able to avert 5,635,565 Disability Adjusted Life Years(DALYs), 42,614 Deaths, 469,853 Unintended Pregnancies and contribute 2,172,984 Couple Years of Protection(CYPs).I anticipate more achievements as we introduce newer FP methods like Sayana Press(DMPA-SC) which expands the options of personalized FP services

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Growing up as a young girl in Northern Nigeria, I encountered a lot of my peers facing difficulty achieving their full potential in life as a result of high teenage pregnancy & early marriages. I saw my peers forced into womanhood with little or no knowledge on reproductive health. This fueled my zeal to contribute in any way possible thus being a pharmacist made me better informed on how women &girls can use modern contraceptives to achieve better health outcomes & realize their full potential

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

Participating in extensive field work avails me the opportunity of increasing awareness &providing information at various fora on RH/FP to aid demand generation for modern FP methods.I conduct regular trainings for various cadre of healthcare providers to horn their FP skills. With the introduction of newer FP methods like Sayana Press,I have taken up the role of engaging providers at various levels with the message of method mix substitution from DMPA-IM to DMPA-SC for better client outcomes

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I will use the platform to organize more trainings for providers &community engagement to increase awareness &knowledge of modern FP methods. For community engagement, my focus will be on women & their spouses in rural areas of northern Nigeria. I will also target key community &religious leaders for these trainings as it will help dispel myths, misconceptions, breakdown barriers that prevent women from accessing FP services & ensure communal acceptance of these interventions
