He successfully achieved Institutionalization of proven-to-work family planning intervention into existing structure: the NURHI-NYSC partnership. He Initiated "Go Men Go-Childbirth spacing Radio Discussion Program,a segment on NYSC weekly Radio Show. – Sherifat Aderonke Rufai, Intern at I-CARE Youth and Women Initiative
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I initiated the idea of ‘Go Men Go’- Childbirth Spacing Radio Discussion Program with men and for men in Kaduna, a segment in the weekly NYSC Radio Program titled “Kaduna Corpers”. I started this radio program at Capital Sound F.M and this singular act made twenty other Corp members to volunteer to join and it now runs in six (6) Radio Stations. The collaborating body,Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI) also trained me and other NYSC Volunteer Corp members as Volunteer Social Mobilizers who mobilize reproductive women to take up FP Services in their Community Health Facilities by issuing them Referral Cards. These yielded very positive results, with a 92% recall of the “Go Men Go” radio by respondents in the recent omnibus survey. I integrated FP into other Social Programs

What sparked your passion for family planning?

On my arrival to the North Western region of Nigeria,i came across an NDHS Data that shows that 1025 out of 100,000 women in the region die due to pregnancy related complications. As a result,i desire to contribute to the reduction to maternal mortality.I joined the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI) to volunteer my time to create demand for family planning services and also request for Technical Assistant for the Institutionalization of NURHI proven-to-work model into the NYSC

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

With my ability to enlist highly driven individuals as Volunteers for the program, I created a platform for capacity development through workshops by Nigeria Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), in other to build Volunteers capacity in generating demand and to get the support of male partners in the zone for family planning. Creation of enabling environment for programs through Advocacy is also tapped into. Referral linkage & clients exit interview are always properly coordinated.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I shall use the platform to propagate the importance of Family Planning using Mass Media (e.g. Radio, Television, etc) and Social Media Campaign shall be added. I shall also increase the number of radio stations that air "Go Men Go- Childbirth spacing radio discussion program". In other to advance my work, $1000 shall be used for logistics needed to create FP Clubs in Tertiary Institutions in Kaduna (North-West) in other to institutionalize Family Planning and make it to be seen as a social norm
