Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

As a frontline physician, I’ve seen the grave consequences of lack of access to FP information and services. I have met women with complications of unwanted pregnancies and heard their stories. I provided FP service for the first time during internship year( Medical school final year) and have been involved in FP ever since. I and my team developed Enat, a mobile application for FP, pregnancy and post partum care. As a youth advisor to Amref health Africa in Ethiopia and the secretary of the youth advisory parliament, I have engaged in ASURE ( Access , service and utilization of reproductive health) project implemented in 15 woredas (Districts) to increase access to comprehensive SRH services and information. Target groups are women of reproductive age, adolescents and youth.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Three women, three preventable deaths. I have seen the face of lack of access to FP . One of the women was a patient my age, wearing a dress with flowers who presented in coma. This was her ninth pregnancy. She was struggling to breath and her younger sister was begging me to save her while her husband was telling me as the fetus has died she was of no use. Sadly, we couldn’t save her. It was too late. But I promised to be her voice. Family planning is a matter of life and death.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I am the advising medical doctor in designing a mobile application for FP and pregnancy. I am also the secretary of Amref YAP. More than the titles, I motivate decision makers and display leadership on daily interactions . I wrote a poem for the patient we lost and through storytelling, I was able to reach a wide audience. I told her story at the Hackathon competition in Kigali to an audience of decision makers from all over the world. For me leadership is about being a voice at every platform.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

In the world I would like to see, youth with visual impairments will have accessible youth friendly service centers . This might be an everyday event in the developed nations but in a country like mine it is still a dream I hope to see come true. I would use the platform to advocate for disability inclusive SRH services through storytelling , to give training on disability inclusive FP service , to design innovative approaches and to make my current work on FP more inclusive .
