Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

My contribution is in many ways like I am advocating for preventing unintended pregnancies and reducing HIV transmission-achieving dual protection. The term “dual protection” means protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS. My community is one of the communities located in the rural areas of Lesotho and people living are not really aware of the danger of unplanned pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. Therefore, after graduating from the university I gathered all youth in the community and selected 20 youth leaders to be trained on family planning advocacy. Then, we train our community about family planning and managed to train more than 300 women, 100 men and 150 youth. However, this helped my community to change and live a better live.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

I was the Assistant Supervisor, as we were collecting the data, then I noticed that a number of adolescents that were HIV positive and mothers or pregnant. This really affected me and prompted me to ask other youth in my community what we should do to safe and provide solutions for these young leaders. This study opened my eyes that every person should learn about family planning and advocate for it anywhere to save life. This fueled my passion to teach and see change in my community.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

Family Planning is a vehicle that breaks the cycle of poverty by empowering adolescents to decide, control their fertility goals and plan their future. I have organized training for youth to train trainers of trainers on family planning with the help of our local partner world vision Lesotho. Since, mentoring of youth leaders in Family Planning advocacy and evidence based programming is good idea; there is a mentoring programme for youth. This has brought good results in my community.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

If I am named a winner of 120 under 40, I am going to use this platform as a learning platform and encourage other youth to learn about family planning through this platform. With $1000 grant, I am going to share it like $200 is going to be used for Media and Communications, $300 for family planning materials written in our Lesotho language (Sesotho). $500 will be used for our community project where our youth will generate money for sustainability development of the project.
