He is a practising medical doctor with demonstrable years of impact and special interest in family size control. His coordinated awareness campaign among community teenagers improved control of unwanted pregnancies and girl child health education. – Nominator
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I led a team of medics under the aegis of Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students, University of Calabar Chapter in community awareness and sensitization on family planning methods among women of reproductive age group in Akamkpa and Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State simultaneously with support of Health workers from both Comprehensive Health Care Center and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. A total of 300 school age teenagers reached out while about 152 nursing and expectant mothers were adequately educated.
Follow up revealed gross improvement in birth control and teenage pregnancies from 82% to a 79% between 2015 and 2017 according to community survey conducted by State Ministry of Health 2019

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Teenage pregnancy which has become a norm in many communities despite State Government efforts at population control in Cross River State, Nigeria. A survey among school age teenagers revealed alarming deficit in Awareness, Knowledge and Practices of family planning due to religious and social-cultural reasons. These and the challenges of growing up in a family of eight(8) with limited resources spurred my vigorous advocacy and campaigns for family planning.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

As a medical doctor and dedicated strong advocate of birth control through family planning, I train local community health care workers and family planning crusaders on various family planning methods while organizing community orientation and awareness program. Yearly,I organize Rural Medical outreach which features birth control and teenage pregnancy among other public health concerns.
Aside community sensitization, I offer family planning services in clinics to couples after due counseling.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

The platform will be used to promote awareness and practices of family planning methods among underserved Nigerian communities towards successful achievement of birth control. While some of the seed funding will be used in awareness campaign and community girl child education for actualization of sustainable development goals, much will be invested in clinical research, revitalization and equipment of local family planning units and reproductive health centre.
