Hadir utilized her strong voice to present the outcomes of implementing family planning/contraception program in Upper Egypt to advocate for good governance and high quality services during her fellowship at the Population Council in Washington DC. – Ivana Smucker, Director of Programs at Hands Along the Nile Development Services, Inc. (HANDS)
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

Commencing my advocacy work and in collaboration with the Population Council, I led capacity building training for +400 female nurses in remote conservative areas in Egypt that suffer from severe poverty. Significantly, I invested in the potential of shifting the trend from family planning to contraception, which opened the space for diverse groups to join the program. Promisingly, I turned those nurses into agents to drive social change. I also focused on stimulating active citizenship and ownership through orienting them about accountability mechanisms. Afterwards, I attended fellowship at the main office of the Population Council in the USA, where I advocated for meaningful community participation as a tool for ensuring sustainability and maintaining the efficacy of delivered programs.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

I’ve been stigmatized while accessing family planning/contraception services being unmarried and despite being a doctor. Questioning the sexual activity of unmarried girls/women continue to be a taboo that limits the accessibility. Thus, I decided to advocate for the right-based approach to include the underserved groups.
Professionally, the increasing total fertility rate and population growth became a problematic issue that pressures the country scarce resources calling for a prompt response.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

As a Women Deliver young leader, I had the opportunity to lead a group of fellow leaders to co-design innovative strategies to eliminate the barriers to accessibility of FP/C services in poor settings.
Academically, I critically analyzed the FP/C situation, policy and the post FP2020 agenda as Egypt is a committer country through my MPH at KIT Royal Tropical Institute. I proposed and advocated for the integration of FP/C services in the antenatal care, post-natal care and youth-friendly spaces

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

To strengthen healthcare system, I’ll form a committee of young leaders to design policy brief advocating for two elements; good quality of services and women empowerment for Family Planning/Contraception, followed by meetings with Egyptian policymakers to propose innovative approaches and to bring youth voices to the table. Above all, to broaden the scope of impact, I’ll present and disseminate the policy brief to relevant national stakeholders and at international platforms as ICFP and ICPD.
