He is a passionate advocate for the promotion, increased access and acceptability to contraceptives use in Nigeria. His activities hugely contribute to the increased access to modern contraceptives in Private health facilities in Abia and Imo. – Afolasade Popoola, Nursing/ Clinical Service Manager at Population Services International-Nigeria
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

Working in a project named the Women's Health Project has availed me the opportunity of helping increase access to modern contraceptives in Nigeria. The uptake of family planning services especially the long Acting reversible contraceptives have increased by more than 20% in the last 4 years especially in Abia and Imo States of Nigeria.
Cases of unmet needs for Family planning have been reduced to the barest minimum. Working with the private sector which attend to about 53% of the population, more Women of reproductive age now access comprehensive Family planning services which include Balanced counselling, Quality service delivery accompanied infection prevention control.
In all, I am happy to have contributed improved access to Modern contraceptive services in Nigeria.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Maternal Mortality is a major challenge in Nigeria. Contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) is very low and Nigeria is still far below expectation when it comes to Maternal health.
All through my childhood and my years in the medical school, i have always longed for the opportunity to contribute my quota in helping reduce the alarming maternal mortality rate in Nigeria. Improving access to Family planning services provides me with the best platform to help improve maternal mortality in Nigeria.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

As a Clinical Services Manager in my Organisation, I am saddled with both clinical and administrative responsibilities in my territory. I supervise 30 health providers in 30 health facilities on Quality service provision and also perform oversight supervisory function on Inter personal Communication agents in the community.
As a team Player I am always willing to learn from my subordinates by holding regular staff meeting and sharing of Ideas.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

Access to free commodities has been one of the reasons for unmet need for Family planning. Many Women of reproductive age cannot afford the cost of accessing this services.
When i win the $1000 grant, I intend to use the funds to procure Family planning commodities and distribute to Local health centers in Abia and Imo states. I will also conduct Supportive Supervisory visits to ensure the commodities are used judiciously.
Part of the fund will e used to get infection prevention commodities.
