Esther Osime is a sexual and reproductive health expert she has supported the provision of Family planning information and services to over 25,000 vulnerable women and girls affected by conflict in the north eastern part of Nigeria. – Nominator
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I contributed by improving the availability and use of Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) including Adolescent SRH, Family Planning, Maternal Health information and Services that are gender-responsive and meet human rights standards for quality of care and equity in access for vulnerable populations living in Internally displaced Person (IDP) Camps and high risk host communities affected by humanitarian emergencies in North eastern part (Borno state) of Nigeria. Some of my notable accomplishments are:
•Provision of Adolescent SRH information and services to 35,629 (23164 Female and 12465 Male) adolescents
•Provision of family planning (Injectables, Condom, Oral pills) services to 12, 262 (8198 Female and 3,864 Male) vulnerable population using mobile outreaches.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

I developed interest in the family planning (FP) field because I witnessed first-hand the death of women and girls from child bearing complications caused by difficulties in accessing quality reproductive Health information and Services while growing up. As I grow older, I begin to see that this death can be prevented through the provision of comprehensive reproductive health information and services especially Family Planning services and I have been working since 2013 to achieve this.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I led the implementation of Sexual and Reproductive health (SRH) including Adolescent SRH, Family Planning, Maternal health) project for Internal Displaced Person (IDPs) living in IDP camps and high risk host community in Nigeria affected by humanitarian crisis through on the job training and mentoring of community volunteers and project staff. I also provide hands on mentoring on provision of Family planning services to front line health workers working across the interventions sites.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I will used the platform to enhance my skills on reproductive health (RH) programming by networking with global RH experts. I will also organize mentorship programme for out of school adolescents living in IDP camps in Borno state on life skills and reproductive health focusing on family planning as well as organize free mobile family planning outreaches to expand access to family planning information and services for vulnerable women and girls living in priority IDP Camps with the grant.
