Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

As a State level program manager in Jhpiego, I have been responsible for the implementation of multiple projects on Family Planning in Odisha {NIPI Post Partum IUCD project and Expanding Access to IUCD Services in India (EAISI) project} since 2014.
Over the period of last 3 years, I have advocated, coordinated and collaborated with government officials, partners & stakeholders for effective program implementation. I have mentored and led my team & we have been able to directly support 118 Sub-district level public health facilities in initiating services within the first 6 months of the project. In the last 3 yrs more than 2000 service providers have been trained & supported by us on Comprehensive IUCD services and more than 85,000 clients have been benefited through this initiative.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

During my MD, I had undertaken research studies to assess the unmet need for family planning of women in Postpartum period, who came for their baby's immunization at 6 weeks. I realized that majority of postpartum women were unaware about the return to fertility and need for use of modern contraception in the postpartum period. This made me to take up the challenge and work on addressing it. This was reinforced with the knowledge that, effective expansion of FP services can reduce MMR & IMR.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

My core work involves leading a diverse field team comprising of 6 social scientists, 4 Nursing Program Officers & 8 Medical doctors. I have mentored & trained them as trainers on Comprehensive IUCD services, FP counselling & commodities management so that they perform their role effectively. I have supported & build their capacity to analyse & use program data thus ensuring that they are able to provide quality support to intervention facilities and achieve success.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I would like to use the opportunity for undertaking an initiative and develop a "M-health" based application on Contraception method choice.
The smart phone based App can help women to choose the method appropriate for them based on their Medical Eligibility criteria & preference; in the privacy of their homes and in consultation with their partner. Empowered with this knowledge they can discuss further details with their Health Service provider and arrive at a decision with informed choice.
