Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

Under EAISI project I have been working since 2014 in health care facilities of different parts of Odisha. During all these years I have worked with administrators, providers and field workers like ASHA and ANMs with aim to improve the Family planning services. Through capacity building via training and providing post training hand holding support, improving and strengthening counselling mechanisms and supporting in the establishment of strong follow up care, FP acceptance particularly ppiucd and paiucd acceptance have shown great improvements (from less than 5% to more than 20%) and has been able to address the high unmet needs of FP in these areas. Currently I am trying to improve the quality of FP services further through new innovative ways of improved counselling and follow ups.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

The realization of family planning as one of the most effective intervention in improving the maternal and child health and its impact on reducing the MMR and IMR and it influenced me a lot to work in the family planning activities in a state like Odisha having very high MMR and large unmet need of Family Planning.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I have trained the providers in family planning services particularly in IUCD services and through continuous post training supports and follow ups have been able to bring changes in attitude of providers in providing good FP counselling services thereby improving the acceptance of services. I have also worked with field workers to address the myths and misconceptions regarding family planning methods which has been a major barrier in acceptance of FP in these areas.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I would like to utilize this opportunity to engage the field workers and create some champion ground level workers who will work in the direction of improving counselling for family planning services and improve awareness. The grant can be utilized for development of IEC materials and videos in local languages which will help in this direction.
