Ruth Grace has been able to champion registration of MSFC grassroot chapter in our university. she has been involved in trainings on reproductive health, family planning methods and unsafe abortions among medical students in Uganda. – Nominator
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

i am engaged in giving workshops and facilitating focused group discussions for students and youths on family planning methods and contraception methods that are easily accessible and convenient for use. this i have done as a student leader of Medical Students for Choice grassroot chapter in Mbarara.
Through this i have been able to engage youths in conversations to look for solutions to challenges in reproductive health. I am involved in advocacy campaigns on the need for change in legisaltion towards abortions in Uganda.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

In Uganda, abortion is a restricted health service, well we have plenty of family planning options but question is why is this failing, why do we continue having intended pregnancies. this signified that there was a gap that needed to be fixed especially with the youths. There is what i like to call stigma towards pregnancy and with less knowledge on contraception methods, these youths are pushed to opt for unsafe abortions. This is what needed to be addressed, adequate sensitization.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I am a student leader of grass root chapter Medical students for choice- Mbarara University, i have been able t create liaisons with on campus groups and pro-choice clinics, marie stopes Mbarara branch, to create avenues for getting technical support during workshops.
i have also been selected new youth ambassador for Marie Stopes international.
i am a volunteer in Standing Committee of Reproductive heath including HIV in the federation of Uganda medical students association.
