Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I have contributed to the promotion of Comprehensive sexuality education for adolescents and youth in Nigeria, I have also been instrumental to the abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation in Nigeria. I have organized school sensitization outreaches, community dialogues & grass root sensitization projects to inform and teach people how and why we must be responsible for our sexual health and actions. All of these projects have made me record more than 80,000 direct impact and millions of indirect impact. In the last 5 years, I have consistently appeared on more than 15 TV and radio stations with an estimated reach of more than 120,000,000 talking about sexual rights and responsibilities. I am currently working on a new project tagged #SheMustKnow- a project to reach & teach more girls.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

At a very tender age, I was mutilated by my grandmother. As a survivor, instead of brooding over the psychological and health implications it has brought my way, I have decided to speak up for millions of voiceless women & girls. I want to change the mindset of women like my grandma, I want them to know education is the best protective mechanism for the girl child. I envisage a world where girls can make informed choices about their sexual health & women are not oppressed by harmful practices.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I began my NGO at age 20 while I was studying for a degree in Sociology and Anthropology in the university. I served as the Vice president of the students’ association and occupied other leadership positions. My unique strength is evident in how I have successfully combined all those responsibilities with my academics. My leadership skills can be seen in how I have ran an NGO for 5 years, consistently carrying out projects to save the lives of women and girls with little or No support.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

With the $1000 as a winner, I will teach 500 school girls on CSE and also do a one hour phone in radio program on Family planning with which I will reach 5,000,000 people. I will make Jotters with information on Family planning written on first two pages (200 pcs)- $285, Banner- $57, Shirts: $285, Radio Airtime: $146 Production of Family planning radio jingle; $85, Administrative costs & Logistics- $142 =$1000.
