I have seen Ann Mitu grow let Melinda of Bill & Belinda Gates Foundation says it for herAs Ann Mitu, a young mother and family planning advocate I met in Kenya put it, “if we lose our girls to teenage pregnancy, who will be the leaders of tomorrow" – Daniel Duwa, Mentor at The Innovation Centre - Loresho Ridge
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

In2014 i founded Young Mothers Africa a community based organization that helps in creating awareness on issues surrounding teen pregnancy how to curb it an life after the fact, started to volunteer at Biafra health center. since then we have had more than 500 young mother coming in for FP services and a monthly 'afya yangu' counseling for new young mothers.
As community health volunteer i work closely with health workers to eradicate the stigma surrounding the age limit on when\who should visit the health facility for fp,antenatal and postnatal care.
last year i run a campaign 13000 is not just a number..this is the number of girls dropping out of school each year because of teen pregnancy or because they don't have access to education.they belong in school not at home as young mothers.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Got pregnant at 19 just after finishing high school,at the same time a friend of mine was sitting for her exam while 8 months pregnant. My parent got really mad at me an year later i lost the father of my child.pregnancy can be dangerous especially for girls whose bodies are not yet mature, globally pregnancy related complications are the leading cause of death among girls.Decided to create awareness if we loose our girls to teen pregnancy who will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I work closely with our area chief, leaders and chv in rescue young girls who are married at an earlier age or who have been denied health services, considering almost 1 in 4 kenyan girls are married before the age of 18.we donate sanitary towel to ensure that young girls don't miss school.i have been on the front line in advocating for comprehensive sexuality education; how do you explain a 15 yr old girl who is pregnant and was not raped..CSE does not lead to earlier/riskier sexual behavior.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

we have an ongoing campaign 'Future Planning kwa Street' that bring fp services close to street family we make effort to reach out mostly young mothers\girls who live in the streets because no women should be left behind we offer voluntary family planning services .last year in patnership with other parties we have successfully been doing free medical camp which we had atleast 1200 people.
with this fund it means we will be able to reach out to more women with adequate commodities.
