Position: Project Assistant
Organization: Marie Stopes International Kenya
Alex initiated an online Thunder Clap campaign titled "The Voices of Youths, We Decide " talking about youths being agents of change and why their options and opportunities in life are vital for global development . #FULL ACCESS,FULL ACCESS OF FP – Kevin Karuga, Youth Mentor at Family Health Options Kenya
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

As a Resource Person for the Access, Services and Knowledge (ASK) Project while at Family Health Options Kenya, I mobilized young people (10-24 years) to access the FP services through health education sessions and information sharing at the University .The new media strategy and health forum approach at outreaches was a buy in.
Being the Chairperson of the Kenya Red Cross University, the leadership position was an add on to reaching thousands of young people in campus and even others from the community with a response rate of 80% on the initial target. The services were scaled up due to the demand creation initiative and young people accessed services at outreaches and those who never received immediate services due to their commitments, they were referred to the YFSs via social media

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Giving a voice to the girl child is my goal. Hearing of young ladies loosing their lives as a result of unsafe abortions in informal settlements caught my attention while interning at FHOK . I would like to see a society where every pregnancy is wanted, every child birth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. Addressing high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality due to unsafe abortion is key and this is only possible if young people are informed on Comprehensive Sexuality

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your family planning efforts, and what have you done to overcome it?

The biggest challenge in the reproductive health field is the conflict between religion and human rights. The faith based organizations talk of morals while we focus on SRH rights. Advocacy has been the key approach in decriminalizing reproductive rights which are human rights that have to be be upheld with uttermost dignity. Teenage Pregnancy campaigns especially in Kilifi County of Kenya are going on and the Community has been engaged through the Community Learning Program to create awareness

What is your (country/region/city)’s biggest challenge in family planning, and how can it be addressed?

In Kenya's Kilifi County, the biggest obstacle has been Cultural interplay in development.Community Ignorance also has also played part in the derailing of advocacy initiatives. As a website contributor for the "Youth for Change " website, I echoed the same through article development .Policy dialogue and advocacy, interventional media campaigns and awareness of appropriate policies can be a step forward.

What do you want to accomplish in the next 5 years?

By 2020, I will have lobbied for young people to be equally involved governance and decision making by actively participating in formulation of policies .I would like to have empowered young people to spearhead the slogan #FULL ACCESS #FULL CHOICE of FP through advocacy and demand generation in order to help cut down the 18% teenage pregnancy rate in Kenya; a rate that has remained unchanged for the last 5 years
