Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I contribute towards improving the technical expertise of over 40 FP providers in private health facilities through regular supportive visits which enables capacity building and on the job coaching on various acceptable quality standards on family planning. This has greatly increased quality of service delivery on family planning and these private facilities now provide integrated reproductive health services; such as cervical cancer screening and HIV testing&counseling. Using my skills of PBCC,over 85% of providers are on a constant upward movement on the adoption stairway. Thus there is an increased knowledge and uptake of long term methods of FP. With increased awareness and sensitization, over 85% of those given post abortion care also take up FP services afterwards.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

During my university days,I had a seamstress with 5 children & another pregnancy. She had no good support from her husband. She almost lost her life due to pregnancy complications.I informed her of the importance of taking up a FP method after she delivered, she was quite ignorant & she said “had I known I would have visited FP clinic earlier”. After this experience, I realized there is a need to constantly health educate women about FP.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I mentor and coach service providers in private hospitals to update them on current FP issues. I also provide supportive supervision on balanced counseling strategy, insertion skills on IUD&implant, infection prevention, hospital cleanliness and documentation. I initiate advocay visits to directors of private hospitals to ensure continued enabling environment for family planning in their clinics.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

The acceptability rate of contraceptives for adolescents is low and this has resulted in unsafe abortion. I When I get the grant, I will establish 3 sustainable youth friendly centres in selected LGAs in Oyo State which will serve as recreational centre, skill acquisition centre but most importantly it will have a reproductive health clinic with a trained adolescent friendly health personnel. The adolescents will have access to reproductive health services without discrimination.
